Gary Chaloner was one of the founding members of Cyclone Comics and has been writing, drawing and publishing since the mid-1980s. He is the creator of Flash Damingo and The Jackaroo (published by Cyclone Comics), Red Kelso (published online) and The Undertaker Morton Stone (published by Gestalt Comics). Gary also established the annual Ledger Awards, acknowledging excellence in Australian comics and publishing.
Gary has been published in the United States by IDW, Dark Horse Comics, Marvel Comics and DC Entertainment. Career credits include ‘Will Eisner’s John Law’, ‘Robert E. Howard’s Breckinridge Elkins’, ‘Planet of the Apes: Urchak’s Folly’, ‘The Olympians’ and guest issues of ‘The Badger’, ‘Power Company’ and ‘Astro City’. Recently, he has worked on ‘Unmasked’ from Gestalt Comics and has worked with Frew Publications on a cover for ‘The Phantom’.
He is currently producing nine issues of Cyclone Redux (reprinting his Flash Damingo & The Jackaroo story arc) and working on the artwork for ‘Proud Heart: The Love of Achilles‘. In 2018, he is commencing an anthology title, Adventure Illus., featuring ‘Cyclone Force’, ‘Morton Stone’, ’Doc Wilde’ and ‘Red Kelso’, among others.
Gary is the 2017 recipient of the Jim Russell Award. This award is made to the individual or organization who in the opinion of the Australian Cartoonists’ Association Board has made a significant contribution to Australian cartooning.
