Brenton McKenna

Brenton is an Indigenous Author/Illustrator from Broome, Western Australia. As a youngster Brenton struggled with reading and writing. It wasn’t until he picked up a comic book at the age of 10 that changed everything. Brenton has been addicted to comic books ever since. Reading, drawing and now creating his own graphic novels, Brenton draws his inspiration from daily happenings, folklore, mythologies and ghost stories, combat studies and pure curiosity. Now he is recognised as Australia’s first Indigenous Graphic Novelist with his own acclaimed series Ubby’s Underdogs.

Brenton studied at Goldburn Ovens TAFE and in 2000 was one of twenty successful applicants to be awarded a highly sought after mentorship with the Australian Society of Authors in 2008. One of three successful applicants to be awarded X Media Lab Digital Storytellers $20,000 grants in 2011. Brenton has been invited to festivals around the country and has conducted cartooning workshops from remote communities in the NT to private schools such as Scotch College, Wesley College, and John XXIII Secondary School. Brenton has traveled internationally to India for the Bangalore Literature festival and Scotland to the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

The UBBY’S UNDERDOGS series includes his first graphic novel The Legend of the Phoenix Dragon followed by the release of his second graphic novel Heroes Beginnings in 2013. His third graphic novel The Dragons’ Return is set for release through Magabala Books in 2018.
