Flogging Comics

Exploring comics retail and distribution in Australia (and beyond)

The primary sales point for comics is the comic shop, but getting Australian comics into shops is actually a big problem; at best you can put your work in the local shops on consignment, but what about the rest of the country – and, indeed, the world? This panel covers the problem from many perspectives: the retailer, the publisher and the creator. It will be an open and frank discussion of the situation and hopefully, posit some solutions.

Presenter: MAL BRIGGS

Wolf serves as Editor-in-Chief for Australia’s leading independent graphic novel publishing house, Gestalt, which he co-founded with Skye Ogden in 2005.  Since that time, Wolf’s endeavours have helped changed the nature of the comics industry in Australia and assisted in building reputations and careers for Australian talent in the international market.

He was featured as one of the main subjects in an ABC documentary, Comic Book Heroes, which chronicled the highs and low of publishing comics in Australia. In recent years, Wolf has been a sought-after guest speaker and panelist at writers festivals around the world.

Bruce Mutard has been writing and drawing comics for 26 years, producing 4 graphic novels: The Sacrifice (Allen & Unwin, 2008), The Silence (Allen & Unwin, 2009), A Mind of Love (Black House Comics, 2011), The Bunker (Image Comics, 2003) and a collection of short stories, Stripshow (Milk Shadow Books, 2012).

He also has had short stories in Overland, Meanjin, The Australian Book Review, Cordite and Tango among others, and has illustrated several books for Macmillan Education’s Stories From Australia’s History, series. He has completed a research Masters by exhibition on what it means to ‘write with pictures’ at Monash University.

He is currently at work on his next graphic novel, along with many other projects to raise the awareness and profile of comics in Australia and overseas.
